For a few years now I’ve had this project on my mind (and heart), but recently I felt a drive to begin this project that I’m calling TruthBTold. I meet with wonderful people 55+, I take some quick photos while we sit and chat about their youth, their life philosophies, and, we discuss whatever comes organically, naturally. I only bring a camera, pad and pen.
I suppose part of my desire to do this project was my rising fatigue of all things celebrity, telling me what they think I should think, do, buy, feel. I’m so over being bombarded with privileged, bad-behaving stars and reality shows that show the "normal” people that are actually "produced" people, prompted to push their own limits of bad-behavior, again telling us what we should think, feel, eat, etc., etc. I totally understand this from a business perspective and I'm not a media-hater — I actually love pop culture, but I guess I am looking for balance in all the media madness I have exposed myself to over the years. I wanted to talk to real folks and ones that had some insights and experience living the everyday life that most of us live without the world watching. Maybe not remarkable lives by any hollywood standards, but I found each person's life story actually... extraordinary. Some of my new-found friends also presented me with wonderful images from their personal family albums, which they allowed me to photograph as well. I then married all the elements of my visit and put together my favorite photos and sayings that resulted. This has been and continues to be a heartwarming and intense experience. After the visits, I feel wide open… even vulnerable and very emotional — not because I'm sad… but because this project has filled me in ways I never expected, or knew possible. This project is a gift to me and I will forever treasure my time with each and every participant. If you are 55+ and would like to be part of this photo project, feel free to contact me. |
